Encyclopedia of Mythos

Dani Cojo

Mythos are a special type of creature that live within the Egg. Created after flora and fauna, most breeds are tied to a specific deity that watches over them, while some do not have a deity. Unlike humans, they often have magic that they can utilize in different ways. There are three main types of Mythos: Humanoid, Shifters, and Beasts. There are also special exceptions to the rules.

Humanoid mythos are those who share majority of their characteristics with humans. They do not have an animal-like form, and save for a few traits, can pass off as humans without trouble. These are common on all planets within the Egg, especially on Thornbrush and Earth.

  • ELVES: Elves are a major breed among Thornbrush, but rather rare on Earth. Their populations are often overwhelming compared to other mythos. They are separated into multitudes of factions with Thesians at the top of the chain, followed by Telkens and Drevnik. All elves have a sense of pride for their heritage, and may have a tendency to feel superior toward other races of mythos. They were created by the goddess Athena.
    • Thesians are very elegant and royal in appearance, with long hair that is usually white or platinum blond, and long, pointed ears. They are also very tall and dress in high quality clothes and jewelry. They are the most influential among their society and the most privileged, and have the most advanced military.
    • Telkens are a smaller group of elves that dress in earth toned clothing that they make themselves from nature. Their ears are usually shorter, not much longer than humans, and slightly pointed. They may have a variety of hair and eye colors, but earth tones are the most common. They live in separate clans, and often work for the High Elves. They are divided into smaller clans with specific talents.
      • Snake Clan: They are skilled in magic.
      • Bear Clan: They are warriors.
      • Cougar Clan: They are hunters.
      • Hawk Clan: They are scouts.
      • Rabbit Clan: They are crafters.
      • Wolf Clan: They are leaders.
    • Drevnik are Snake Clan Telkens that chose to rise up against the King of the Thesians. After their failed uprising, the King cast them out to Black Water: a toxic swamp that the Drevnik were forced to live off of. Due to this, they have developed changes in appearance such as charcoal gray skin and red eyes. They are immune to many toxins and are skilled with crafting poisons. A smaller part of the Drevnik eventually left Black Water to find a new home. They traveled to Earth to find solitude. There are very few remaining from this family.

  • FAERIES: The fae-folk are believed to be the offspring of pixies and humans, and are more advanced than both origins. All faeries have a tendency to be prideful, vain, and promiscuous. While taller than their pixie brethren, they are typically shorter than the average human. Many have striking features such as pointy ears, multi-colored eyes, skin tones with a slight hue. The fae-folk are divided into two sections: Seelie and Unseelie. The division is purely political and cultural. Majority of the fae-folk live on their own planet, Feyseele, but some live on Earth and Thornbrush as well. They have no designated deity.
    • Seelie faeries rely on law and order to run their governments, and are extremely noble and fair. They are run by a council made up of elected families that determine laws that govern society. They often look more human compared to the Unseelies.
    • Unseelies, on the other hand, are more chaotic and are run by a sole King who rules until he dies or is overthrown. The King is a gender-neutral term, and may be male or female. They embrace the wild nature of their pixie roots (even though Pixies want nothing to do with unseelies) and may tattoo and paint themselves to resemble pixies. They prefer to cheat and steal, and believe in the idea of “first come first serve” rather than “equality for all.”

  • ORACLES: Oracles are humans with natural psychic abilities. While not technically a mythos, as they are 100% human, they are treated as such due to their affinity to the psychic element. They are extremely rare and look no different from other humans. Legends says that they have a spiritual bond to the original humans, Adam and Eve, and that this bond grants them their powers. Most oracles are unaware of their abilities, due to their lack of knowledge about mythos, and are misdiagnosed for having a mental disorder rather than prophecy. Majority live on Earth, but one or two do reside on Thornbrush. They are ruled over by Gloria.

  • PIXIES: They are fae-like creatures which live exclusively in shaded forests and groves, and can reach heights between three feet and eight feet tall. All pixies have earthen color schemes, many having green, brown, or blue skin. This allows them to blend in with their surroundings. They prefer to wear clothing made from nature, and paint their bodies with flower extracts. Instead of wings, they have plant-like growths that sprout from their shoulders and bloom. They are unable to fly, but take pride in these appendages. These cunning mythos enjoy tricking humans into following them into the forests and living with them as servants. Due to this, they eventually created a new breed called faeries. They live on Feyseele with faeries, but a rare few may choose to visit other worlds. They were created by the god Apollo.

  • SIRENS: Sirens are well known creatures that have been made nearly extinct after a war with the merfolk. The more advanced cousin of the harpy, sirens have learned to assimilate with humans and blend with them. They have lost their bird-like features over time, with majority having only bird wings or sharp nails. Occasionally, sirens that live in more rural areas may grow feathers on their body like freckles. They enjoy living near the coasts, but often clash with merfolk that they run into. They are beautiful singers that are able to lure in humans with their voice. They have no designated deity.

  • UNGULATES: This broad term is used for creatures such as satyrs, fauns, and centaurs. These creatures are half-human and half-hooved animal in appearance, and often share traits with deer, goats, and horses. These creatures are prominent on Thornbrush. They were created by Hera.
    • Centaur: The most aggressive of the ungulate creatures, these horse-like creatures enjoy roughhousing and battle, and many join the elven military on Thornbrush. They are typically skilled archers, but also enjoy other weapons such as swords and axes. They prefer to live in plains and on open land.
    • Faun: The most docile of ungulates, fauns are half-deer folk who are are shy and rarely like to be approached. They live deep in the forests and enjoy sunning by lakes and streams. They are very fond of the fae folk, and spend a lot of their time playing with fae who visit their woods.
    • Satyr: These goat-folk are playful and enjoy music. They prefer to live in slightly wooded areas in mountains and hills, and are friendly to visitors. Unlike their faun cousins, they warmly welcome those who approach, but can also put up a fight when threatened like their centaur brethren.

  • VAMPIRES: The original vampires were large bat-like creatures with massive fangs and leather wings. Their only food source is the blood of mythos and humans, and they were unable to procreate naturally. Instead, those that survived their attacks would succumb to a disease laced in their bite and become a vampire. Because of this, other races may become a vampire, with the most common being humans. They are mainly nocturnal and prefer to stay in dark places. However, they have learned to adapt to sunlight and will often wear dark clothes or carry umbrellas to shade themselves. Contrary to human belief, they do not burst into flame the moment sunlight hits them. They instead slowly cook and burn from the inside until they eventually catch fire. Modern vampires are exclusive to Earth, while the original beasts remain hidden. They were created by Ares.

  • WARLOCKS/WITCHES: Legends say that a Drevnik from Thornbrush fell in love with a human, and his children were the first warlock and witch. Today, all warlocks and witches are believed to be descendants from this common ancestor, and have traces of pure elven magic within them. They appear completely human, with only their strange colored eyes denoting their magical abilities. Others who have attempted to purify their magic by inbreeding may resemble elves, with pointed ears, discolored hair and skin, and slit pupils. All warlocks and witches must go through a ritual that awakens their natural magic affiliation, and are then able to master one to two classes of magic; unlike elves, who have access to all classes. This ritual includes tattooing runes and other magical spells onto their body, allowing them to always be in tune with their powers. Warlocks live on Earth, though those with strong elven roots try to travel back to Thornbrush. These creatures have no designated god.

Shifters are those who can switch between two forms: one humanoid and one beastly. These are often creatures who have evolved over time to blend in with their environment. Some have a preferred form that they choose to live. Shifters are mostly common on Earth, where living with humans is essential to survival.

  • DOPPELGANGERS:These creatures are possibly the rarest - or most common - of all mythos, as no one knows when they are looking at one. These creatures are able to shift into any form, with the only limitation being that they must be a living thing; they can shift into plants and animals, but cannot shift into water, air, earth, etc. However, they choose to have two bonded forms that they flip between. It is nearly impossible to tell when a doppelganger is in your presence, even among their own kind as they rarely reveal their true form. Because of their natural ability, they are able to mimic many elements depending on what they shift into, but most of their adoptive powers will vanish the moment they shift into something else. They are often have a playful attitude and enjoy experiencing the world in every form imaginable. They feed off energy, and often hunt pure elementals. No one knows how long they can live, as they will die in the final form that they choose - and many rarely choose to pass away in their true form. They are watched over by Demeter.

  • DRAGONS: Dragons have been recognized as a creature of immense power and royalty for millennia. All cultures have some version of a dragon in their mythology, however they have all derived from three species of dragon originating from their own planet - Amphithere. Overtime, dragons discovered a way to travel between worlds, and shared this magic with other mythos. Majority of dragons have scaled bodies, but a very rare few may develop a mutation that gives them feathers or fur. Dragons can survive in almost any climate, and may have special abilities based around their climate. While dragons have the capacity to shift into a human-like form through ancient magic, many prefer to remain in their beastly form. Dragons were created by Poseidon and are now ruled over by Malektil.
    • Anush:The first subset of dragons are the Anush, which are landlocked dragons that do not have wings. While they can swim, they prefer to live on plains and burrow underground. They are incredibly spiritual people, their leaders becoming shamans who can use their magic to work spirits and the undead.
    • Mao’unii:These dragons live solely in the water. They are long, serpent like creatures. They are familiar with the merfolk, and overtime had begun to help deep-sea merfolk leave Earth to go to a safer place.
    • Drakkon:The third family live high in mountain ranges and spend most of their days flying. These are the most abundant and familiar among humans. Many have large wings and crested heads, while others are able to fly without the assistance of wings. They have a high moral code, and a strict criminal system for those that they see breaking their laws. Common punishments include death and wing-ripping.

  • MANTCORES: These beasts have evolved slowly over time and are not as well-known as other mythos. They generally stay secluded from humans, either by living in caves or on islands. However, they prefer to hunt humans over mythos. The first Manticore was a beast with the body of a lion, a human face, large bat wings, and a poisonous scorpion tail. Nowadays, it is more common to see manticores that look like humans and have the ability to shapeshift into their more monstrous forms. They have developed this shifting ability to live among their prey. Those who refused to evolve - known as ferals - were secluded to an island on Earth, while the more advanced live on their native planet, Thornbrush on the island of Tessia. There are three families of Manticores. Their original deity was Hades. The community of manticores refuse to accept Jackal as their ruler.
    • The Casey Family is the largest clan, and is made up of the most noble and strongest manticores. On Thornbrush, they command the military and rule over the kingdom of Tessia. They are also the largest of the manticores, and have distinctive striped markings on their fur. They prefer to seduce their prey.
    • The Bloom Family is the second largest clan, and is made up of manticores without any particular markings. They are the strategists and politicians, often developing the cave systems that they used to travel and hunt prey. They also developed the human farm on their homeland valley, which is their preferred method of hunting. The humans are imported from Caten by the High Elves in trade for medicines and poisons native to Tessia.
    • The Bates Family is the third clan and the smallest. Their defining features are their large claws and spotted fur. They at the bottom of the totem pole in manticore society, lowly blue-collar workers. They are a controversial family, as they are cannibals who hunt other manticores rather than humans or mythos.

  • MERFOLK: These creatures are one of the more famous mythos and one of the most sighted. They can be found in oceans, rivers, and lakes. Their specific breed and appearance may vary based on their location. Fish including sharks, reef fish, and eels are the most common. However, some mer-folk resemble octopi, whales, rays, and crustaceans. Merfolk that live close to human populations have developed the ability to shift to a human form when on dry land, but revert to their original form when submerged in water. Many breeds of merfolk died in the war against the sirens, and most remain hidden. Some have even left the ocean to live on land in a human form permanently. They were created by Aphrodite.
    • Landlocked: Merfolk that live in rivers and lakes are considered landlocked, as they are surrounded by land. Merfolk who live in these regions rely on camouflage to stay hidden, and tend to have algae and moss growing on them. These breeds are more likely to have human-like traits and may shift to a human form more often.
    • Open Ocean: These merfolk are often much larger in size, the vast ocean providing them plenty of space to grow. While human-like mers may reside in reefs and along coasts, it is rare to see a mer with human-like traits in the deep ocean, and many have developed traits such as bioluminescence or blindness. Deep-sea mers rarely ever shift and prefer to stay hidden, while reef-mers enjoy blending in with humans.

  • WEREBEASTS: Werebeast is a broad term used for mythos who can shift into a pure animal form. The most common breeds are wolves and big cats, however other creatures such as giant porcupines, snakes, and bears are a possibility. Regardless of breed, these creatures have two subspecies: breeders and steriles. They were created by Artemis.
    • Breeders began as a pack of animals that were infused with magic. This allowed them to become more human by walking on two legs, and developing cities and governments. Breeders look extremely animalistic with barely any human traits except for the ability to communicate with humans. They are typically unable to shift into a human form. Occasionally, a breeder may become infected with a rare disease that causes them to become rabid.
    • Steriles are creatures that were bitten by infected breeders. They slowly turned into a werebeast over time. They kept their original features, but have noticeably odd traits, such as more hair, animal ears, fangs, or paws. They are unable to breed normally and can only expand their race through biting others. However, majority choose not to participate, as they were bitten later in life. Children who are bitten rarely survive the transformation.

Beasts are mythos who do not have a humanoid form. They are monstrous and often primal - more like their animal counterparts. However, there are rare cases where some beasts have developed into shifters due to their environment. Beasts are rare sights on Earth, but more prominent on Thornbrush or on their respective planets.

  • HARPIES: Considered endangered and possibly extinct, harpies are the more primitive cousins to sirens. Living in rocky cliffs near ocean coasts or in mountain tops, harpies are bird-like creatures with the body of a bird and the torso of a human. Despite their human-like face, they are too beastly to live among humans and are unable to shapeshift. They have large talons that are perfect for killing prey and carrying them to their giant nests, and massive wingspans that can easily fly through the strongest turbulence. No one has seen a harpy in many years, as they tend to hide away in secluded locations to try and keep their kind alive. They were created by Hermes.

  • PHOENIXES: The phoenix is considered one of the most rare and beautiful beasts in the mortal world. However, these creatures are far from mortal. When these fire-birds die, they burn away into ashes and are reborn. Despite this constant cycle, they still breed with one another, making their eggs valuable. There are three size classes: Miniature, Standard, and Giant. They are ferocious creatures who will attack anyone who approaches them, especially when it comes to their offsprings and their nests. While sentient creatures, they can be tamed and have the ability to understand and speak any language, making them excellent pets. They are found exclusively on their home planet, Leatis, Phoenixes come in several colors, with red and gold being the most common, and violet and black being the most rare. Each color is represented with a particular element. These creatures are ruled over by Hephaestus.
    • Red - Fire
    • Gold - Electricity
    • Silver/Gray - Earth
    • White - Ice
    • Purple - Psychic
    • Black - Dark

  • ANBANUNKUN:One of the first magical creatures created. Fashioned by Gaia, they are a race of curious bipedal dragon-folk that stand a hair taller than a human. Their bodies are covered in fine, leathery scales with a more firm protective plating on their stomach running from their neck to their tail. They have superfine crests that sit like a crop of hair on their heads, along with “tufts” at the end of their tails like a lion. High members of society were either born with or magically gifted webbed wings capable of flight. They have a matriarchal society that revolves around the needs of their queens. Their society is rigid, with every member playing their role. Curiously, roles can be reassigned or traded among members if a different task suits them better. Certain roles are more enviable than others, and a display of skill to earn a queen’s favor can be the tipping point to earn a more pleasant role. After the destruction of their home planet, they fled to other worlds along with the Nagwa. Tragically, an ancient plague wiped out most of their tribe. Only the Anush, a small faction, survived. Nowadays, the modern descendants of Anbanunkun have done away with their rigid role-based society and the wings of their ancestors, embracing a more spiritually guided society led by priests called “Gama.”

  • ELEMENTALS: Elemental is a broad term for any being that can control one to two elements. Their appearances can vary depending on their origins and which elements they can control. While elements can be learned through a school of magic, those who are elementals can naturally control these elements without additional training. There are four common elements, and four rare elements that are much more volatile and harder to control. Finally, there are ultra rare elements.
    • Common: Water, Air, Fire, Earth. Mythos are commonly born with these elements, and can command them at will. They can eventually develop into rarer elements through training.
    • Rare: Ice, Psychic, Electricity, Steel. These elements are developed through training a common element affinity. On rare occasions, mythos may be born with an affinity to a rare element and will have to learn a common element with reverse training.
    • Ultra Rare: Light and Dark. These are rarely a native affinity, and must be learned through intensive training.

  • PURE ELEMENTAL: Unlike other elementals, these creatures are not simply mythos who can master an element. Instead, these are creatures made up of the very element they possess. Because of this, they don’t have a humanoid or beast-like form. However, they can choose their form at will and may prefer a human-like or beast-like image. Unlike doppelgangers, they will always retain an elemental feature that is distinct and makes it impossible to fully transform into a particular creature. While technically sexless and genderless, legends say that they may be able to fuse with a host to create the more common elemental. They are hunted by doppelgangers for their energy. They were created by Zeus.

  • NAGWAS: One of the first non-magical creatures created. Fashioned by Chaos, they are almost humanoid in appearance with elongated limbs and multiple sets of horns on their heads and shoulders, which grow continuously and must be shaved down. This creates ridges in their horns, which act as milestones in their lives. Capable of living hundreds of years, they are master hunters and are incredibly resourceful, choosing to live off the land and remain isolated from others. They are a peaceful and diplomatic species, only engaging in combat for sport or hunting. After the destruction of their home planet, the Anbanunkun helped them flee to Thornbrush and start rebuilding. All Nagwas go through various phases of their life. During their youth, they hone their skills of combat and the hunt. Once they are mature, they will venture off in solitude to learn about the world. In their late adult and senior years, they will settle down and join the elders of their clan. Because of this, it’s rare to see a young Nagwa or elder Nagwa outside of their home.

  • THE TREE FOLK: Originating from The Garden, these beings were originally plants that absorbed magic from the sun, water, and ground and developed sentience. With time, they continued to grow and eventually learned to manipulate their roots to move freely. They prefer to remain on their home planet, but a young sapling may choose to explore other worlds. They are the only creature to be created by both Gaia and Chaos in the beginning, and are no longer watched over by a god.
